Christmas at Sullivan Heights Secondary

Christmas at Sulli

This holiday season at Sullivan heights secondary there are going to be many different activities and opportunities to show our school spirit and how Sulli cares. First off, Christmas candy cane grams this winter started selling last Wednesday during lunchtime and will continue to do so this week up until Wedensday December 18th. They will be delivered to the students during period 4 on the 19th.

Student council has set this up and will be donating the money made to Coats for kids after sales are finished. This will definitely be helping the extra money donated by others to this cause through the Global Issues Club. Another great winter event during this last week before the holidays (finally) will be the winter pancake breakfast on Friday December 20th. Student council will be waking up extremely early to go to school and make pancakes and waffles for the entire school. Big thanks to them! The students of Sullivan Heights Secondary will also be asked to wear red and green that day to show their Sulli spirit. And finally, the biggest winter event of the season, the school's famous winter extravaganza. a performance of music, dancing, fun and games for the entire school to watch. I myself will be participating in this fun event and be performing a seussical poem. Last year some people made a video of the "breakdancing elves" with the faces of our principal and vice principals to watch. It was very entertaining and I can't wait to see what's in store for this years extravaganza. It will take place during school on Wednesday December 18th. It's always a fun time at Sullivan Heights especially during the holidays.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Random Acts of Kindness

Random Acts of Kindness

Last week there were quite a few acts of kindness going around the Sullivan Heights Secondary between the students and some teachers. One act of kindness was a student who had baked a batch of Christmas cookies for some of the teachers and staff at the school. She said, "I thought that they needed something for the holidays to show my appreciation and school spirit!" This would be the day that the school had a power outage in the morning. She had went around handing out her homemade cookies to most of the teachers and staff. It was really a great way to greet the season! Another act of kindness would also be last week and it happened during the Winter fest dance. A Sulli student who was diagnosed with down syndrome was dancing alone so another girl who had been dancing with her friends saw her alone so she invited the girl to come dance with them and made a new friend!

It's really great to see all of these different random acts of kindness, whether they're during the holiday season or not. Last year the school had dedicated a whole week to Random Acts of Kindess. The students were going around smiling at everybody in the hallways, and helping out with books that whole week, but it didn't stop there. As Sulli students we had been doing this all year! I will be keeping my eye out for any more seasonal acts!

Story of the Week!

Math Contest!

This week's new story is of the handful of hardworking grade 9 students who were "nominated" to participate in a math contest that will be held on February 13th 2014 in Abbotsford, BC. Starting last, these students had begun practicing and are willing to give up their time on Thursdays and Fridays at lunch to train themselves to use a higher level of math. They find it as a great opportunity and experience to have fun and take their liking to their favourite subject to the next level. Only a few of this handful will be chosen though to go participate. The math contest will need to involve teamwork as well so they will also need to learn how to work together and to try and beat the other contestants. I wish them all the best of luck!

Movember!

Movember at Sulli

Last week at Sullivan Heights Secondary was the last celebrated week of Movember by our Sulli teachers, staff and students. It had been an ongoing fundraiser for the last month to help raise money for prostate cancer. The majority of the male staff and teachers at our school had been trying to grow their prize moustaches from the start of the month to show their support and care for those who have prostate cancer. Even some of our students decided to show their support and grow a moustache, so for this year's Movember every week we had a Whisker Wednesday to give out fake moustaches for everyone to wear. The would also be the day that the students, staff and teachers all pitched in to sell chocolates or other sweets in the Hub to raise the money to donate. The school was able to raise a lot of awareness and money in the end with everyone's help to donate to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Last year's Movember Contestants!

It was truly a great experience for everyone to enjoy and be able to help. There were many pictures taken of the teachers and staff who grew their moustaches and of the students who participated by wearing one. It's definitely an annual event for Sulli and the picture above shows last year's moustache participants. This year I think they did an even better job than last year though!

Story of the Week!

Girl saves Lost Dog

One of own Sulli students was walking by Highland one day when she came across a collarless dog and returned it to its owner. She was walking by Highland with two of friends one day after school and when she said goodbye to them she came across a small dog. her description of the dog was, "It was shorter than my knees, and it had white with grey splotches on its fur and fuzzy ears." The dog did not have a collar or leash on it when she found it and didn't know who to call. She went around frantically knocking on door's and asking whether they owned the dog. She asked two children on the walking by whethe they owned it but they said no, although they did her look for the owner.

Not long after did a young girl run up to her and claimed the dog. It was truly interesting because if our Sulli student did not find the dog then it possibly could have gone missing. She took a lot of initiative and really tried to help.

Sulli's Art Club

Sullivan Heights Secondary's Art Club

Sullivan Heights Secondary's Art Club is currently participating in an annual Surrey's Santa Window walk and will be making small field trips during the next week to paint a beautiful window display to support a charity/ non-profit organization. The Art Club Members that are participating will need to finish their window display this Thursday so it can be ready on the 30th of the month for Surrey's annual Santa Window Walk. There will be many other schools in the district joining to be able to represent and help out the charities. Each school will be given a certain topic (a charity) to represent through their art piece. Sulli's topic is the Surrey Christmas Bureau.

Everyone is encouraged to do the walk and donate money to charity of the window painting that they voted for. The charity would also be near their window and will be providing many other things such as food, face painting, etc. to make extra money for the charity. The window painting that was like best and had more money donated to the charity would receive a prize and the charity/non-profit organization would receive a trophy. These art pieces will also be judged for the prize that will go to the artists of the painting. The prize will be potentially $500.

It's a really great opportunity for the students who are engaging themselves in these kind of events to really take a chance to help out and do what they love.

Spirit Week at Sulli

Spirit Week at Sulli

Last week at Sullivan Heights Secondary was Spirit Week and the students dressed up to show their school spirit. Sullivan's students are really big on Spirit Week because they are always excited to show off their school spirit. Monday last week started off with a nice, comfortable, lazy pajama day. Many students participated in this fun dress-up and were more than happy to come to school in their cozy PJs.  Tuesday was even more fun though because it was twin day. There were many students who partnered up with others to dress alike. In fact I saw some students even dressed up as triplets. Though most of the ninth graders missed a chance to dress up like a hipster on Wednesday, because of Take Our Kids to Work Day, the other students didn`t hesitate to dress up for hipster day. Thursday was yet another great hit because almost all of the students wore their Sulli uniforms.

Spirit Week is a great way to encourage students to have some fun and show some school spirit by dressing up following a certain theme each day of the week. Last year The school had a retro day theme where the students had to show their spirit by dressing up in clothing before the 21st century. There were poodle skirts, leg warmers, as well as some bell- bottoms. It was fun for the whole school and we all enjoyed it. Overall, spirit week is a fun, enjoyable, week where students from our school can show their school spirit by dressing up following a certain school theme every day of the week.

Halloween at Sulli

Halloween at Sulli

Halloween at Sullivan Heights Secondary last Thursday, was yet another successful holiday event. Everyone at the school, including the teachers, enjoyed dressing up and were happy to be in the spirit of All Hallows `Eve. The office staff finally revealed their surprise theme as well: Survivor. The annual Halloween fashion show was also a fun event held in the large gymnasium and many people showed up to watch or participate in this exciting event. There were so many great costumes and everyone was so eager to be there. There was no doubt that they were also eager to go Trick-or Treating. In fact one student said, You're never too old for free candy! Halloween is a great holiday where everyone can get together and be whoever they like even if it is just as themselves.

The picture above is of the office staff at Sulli dressed as the survivor teams

The Halloween candy grams were also a great success and a lot of the students went out during lunchtime to the Hub to buy one for them or their friends. Its definitely a great way to get into the Halloween spirit because nothing says Happy Halloween like candy. Sulli loves celebrating holidays, especially ones like Halloween, and here at Sulli we love Halloween.

Here are some more pictures of the great costumes that day!

Halloween at Sullivan Heights Secondary

Halloween at Sullivan Heights Secondary

Halloween at Sullivan heights secondary is always a fun time, because everyone in the school gets a chance to dress up as whatever they like. They can be the scariest monster or the nicest creature, but whatever it is, the costumes are always amazing and never cease to impress. Last year, one of the most amazing costumes were the fifty-two deck of cards done by the Grads. It was imaginative and very well done since there were 52 Grads, each one card from the deck. They tried out for the annual Halloween fashion show last year, and one first place. Even the school staff has a theme for their costumes, like last year the science teachers dressed up as characters from Star Wars. This year everyone is hurriedly getting their costumes ready and hoping to win first place on this upcoming Thursday at the fashion show, which is being held at lunch time. I intend to win first place myself, with some friends. We are all going as different Batman characters, and I am being the Riddler.

The picture above is of the science teachers last year who all dressed up as characters from Star Wars.

This year at Sullivan we are also promoting the Halloween candy grams again! They started selling last Thursday, with bag sizes from small to large. Last year they sold so fast they ran out of stock two days before they were supposed to. Students can buy them at the hub during lunchtime and they can leave their, or their friend's fourth period classroom and teacher name. It will be a fun and tasty Halloween this year for sure.

Sulli's Annual Haunted Mansion

Sulli's Annual Haunted Mansion

Sullivan Heights Secondary's Theatre Department is hosting their annual Haunted Mansion from October 22 to 24th for those students in period three and four classes to let the students experience "a whole new level of fear." There have been multiple announcements made about the Haunted Mansion as well which I'm sure many of the students remember. The students who are in the theatre department have been working tirelessly to create the most terrifying of experiences in the Bell Centre at the school.

Last year the Haunted Mansion was created and held in the music room but this year the theatre department has decided to move it to the Bell Centre for a larger more terrifying Haunted Mansion II.
Many students are eagerly waiting for this thrilling occasion and are hoping that their teachers sign their classes up for this unforgettable, fun Halloween event. Last year the Haunted Mansion was a hit and since the theatre department has taken this project to the next level, it is sure to be twice the fun and horror. "The Haunted Mansion. Scared yet?"

Sulli's Global Issues' Mental Awareness Week

Sulli's Global Issues' Mental Awareness Week
Sullivan Heights Secondary's Global Issues Club is to be hosting a Mental Health Awareness Week (or MHAW as some like to call it) starting from November 18th to the 22nd although these dates are not yet certain and may change. It has been postponed regarding to the last update for this post although the counsellers' presentation was still carried out on Wednesday November 13th during a Global Issues Club meeting. It was indeed very helpful and informative because they brought most of the mental awareness issues to every ones attention. Everyone in the school will be asked to participate by wearing certain colours; blue or green. These are the colours of the Canadian Mental Health Association. There will be many announcements made during the week to inform people about these issues at school and an assembly to inform the students about more of these issues and ways to get help. They will provide lots of information about different programs created to help and how to deal with them.

The clubs members think it would be a good idea to let people know how to deal with these issues and how to support those who have them. Sulli's global issues club has come a long way with planning the Mental Health Awareness week. During this week we will be all about distributing ribbons that are the colour of the Mental Health Association symbol. The Global Issues club is looking forward to have everyone participate in this informative event.

Sullivan's Annual Terry Fox Run

Sullivan's Annual Terry Fox Run

Sulli's annual Terry Fox Run on Thursday, October 3rd at the school was yet again successful in raising money for donation to a charity that supports cancer patients. Many people participated with determination to do something for those who are diagnosed with cancer by giving money to the school office or to others collecting donations as they ran by. Inspired by Terry, and others that were or are diagnosed with cancer, they ran or walked to show their support.

I ran a survey asking students about who they were running for. One student said, I ran for my dads step dad, my great grandmother, and my grandmother. lung cancer for my dads step dad and my grandmother who had once been diagnosed with skin cancer. Another student told me he was running for his grandpa who had been diagnosed with eye cancer. My classmate had also said she had donated five dollars and wished she would have donated more. Overall this years run had been successful in every way. The school was able to collect a lot of money to donate to the charity.
