Christmas at Sullivan Heights Secondary

Christmas at Sulli

This holiday season at Sullivan heights secondary there are going to be many different activities and opportunities to show our school spirit and how Sulli cares. First off, Christmas candy cane grams this winter started selling last Wednesday during lunchtime and will continue to do so this week up until Wedensday December 18th. They will be delivered to the students during period 4 on the 19th.

Student council has set this up and will be donating the money made to Coats for kids after sales are finished. This will definitely be helping the extra money donated by others to this cause through the Global Issues Club. Another great winter event during this last week before the holidays (finally) will be the winter pancake breakfast on Friday December 20th. Student council will be waking up extremely early to go to school and make pancakes and waffles for the entire school. Big thanks to them! The students of Sullivan Heights Secondary will also be asked to wear red and green that day to show their Sulli spirit. And finally, the biggest winter event of the season, the school's famous winter extravaganza. a performance of music, dancing, fun and games for the entire school to watch. I myself will be participating in this fun event and be performing a seussical poem. Last year some people made a video of the "breakdancing elves" with the faces of our principal and vice principals to watch. It was very entertaining and I can't wait to see what's in store for this years extravaganza. It will take place during school on Wednesday December 18th. It's always a fun time at Sullivan Heights especially during the holidays.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Random Acts of Kindness

Random Acts of Kindness

Last week there were quite a few acts of kindness going around the Sullivan Heights Secondary between the students and some teachers. One act of kindness was a student who had baked a batch of Christmas cookies for some of the teachers and staff at the school. She said, "I thought that they needed something for the holidays to show my appreciation and school spirit!" This would be the day that the school had a power outage in the morning. She had went around handing out her homemade cookies to most of the teachers and staff. It was really a great way to greet the season! Another act of kindness would also be last week and it happened during the Winter fest dance. A Sulli student who was diagnosed with down syndrome was dancing alone so another girl who had been dancing with her friends saw her alone so she invited the girl to come dance with them and made a new friend!

It's really great to see all of these different random acts of kindness, whether they're during the holiday season or not. Last year the school had dedicated a whole week to Random Acts of Kindess. The students were going around smiling at everybody in the hallways, and helping out with books that whole week, but it didn't stop there. As Sulli students we had been doing this all year! I will be keeping my eye out for any more seasonal acts!

Story of the Week!

Math Contest!

This week's new story is of the handful of hardworking grade 9 students who were "nominated" to participate in a math contest that will be held on February 13th 2014 in Abbotsford, BC. Starting last, these students had begun practicing and are willing to give up their time on Thursdays and Fridays at lunch to train themselves to use a higher level of math. They find it as a great opportunity and experience to have fun and take their liking to their favourite subject to the next level. Only a few of this handful will be chosen though to go participate. The math contest will need to involve teamwork as well so they will also need to learn how to work together and to try and beat the other contestants. I wish them all the best of luck!

Movember!

Movember at Sulli

Last week at Sullivan Heights Secondary was the last celebrated week of Movember by our Sulli teachers, staff and students. It had been an ongoing fundraiser for the last month to help raise money for prostate cancer. The majority of the male staff and teachers at our school had been trying to grow their prize moustaches from the start of the month to show their support and care for those who have prostate cancer. Even some of our students decided to show their support and grow a moustache, so for this year's Movember every week we had a Whisker Wednesday to give out fake moustaches for everyone to wear. The would also be the day that the students, staff and teachers all pitched in to sell chocolates or other sweets in the Hub to raise the money to donate. The school was able to raise a lot of awareness and money in the end with everyone's help to donate to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Last year's Movember Contestants!

It was truly a great experience for everyone to enjoy and be able to help. There were many pictures taken of the teachers and staff who grew their moustaches and of the students who participated by wearing one. It's definitely an annual event for Sulli and the picture above shows last year's moustache participants. This year I think they did an even better job than last year though!
